Lanell Fountain (better known as Jeffrey) was born on May 29th, 1974 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the son of Anthony Fountain (4th Generation/Anthony Branch) and a 5th Generation descendent of Elisha Fountain Sr.
Jeffrey attended elementary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota but moved to Alabama to live with his grandmother (Jannie Bell) and be close to his father when he was in 8th grade. He attended JF Shields in Beatrice, Alabama while living in Tunnel Springs and got to experience what it was like growing up in rural Alabama like his father.
When he reached high school (10th grade), his father moved him to Alpharetta, Georgia to live with him. Jeffrey was a gifted student and was very active in extra-circular activities. He was in the marching band and participated on the debate team, wrestling team, track team, community service group and junior court. He graduated with honors and received an appointment to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
While at the Air Force Academy, Jeffrey was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp and the Power-Lifting Team. He received a degree in Astronautical Engineering in 1996. Like his Uncle Carey, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force and began his career as a major weapon systems acquisition officer. He was stationed at Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and assigned to Phillips Laboratory where he worked as a Program Manager. Tragically, on the night of June 21st, 1996 and in a case of mistaken identity, Jeffrey’s life came to an end as a result of gunshot wounds. He was just 22 years old.
Jeffery was a very special young man. He was humble yet confident, positive, gentle, determined, soft-spoken and kind. He excelled at everything he put his mind to, and though he may be gone, he will never be forgotten.
